It’s getting very green around here!! I’ve always dreamed of having an off-grid, self-sufficient homestead. When we bought our first house I was convinced it was time to get to work on making this dream a reality. We planted an ENORMOUS garden that was way too much food and work for two people.

I also decided I needed chickens. 🤔. I never had chickens growing up so I honestly didn’t know much about them, except that a few of my friend’s families got chicks and kept them in their garage. So I decided to order a few online. I sat down and started looking at all the different types of chicks, “Oh, this one looks cute but she will need a friend. This one lays green eggs!! I definitely need a couple of those. Oh, they sell chickens to eat, I could do that.”

A couple weeks later I got a call while at work from a not so happy husband. I could hardly hear him over the excited chirping of the 40 chickens he’d just picked up from the post office. 🤦‍♀️

I have tons of amazing chicken stories I will share. (I should probably put them on my blog…).

But needless to say my first venture into homesteading ended with 1/2 acre garden filled with weeds and disappointment.

My 40 chickens quickly became less fun when roosters attacked me every time I ventured out my front door. Oh and I had to go out each night to shake a few of them out of a tree and into the coop to keep the mountain lion and other predators from tearing them apart.

See so many great stories to share 🤣🤣🤣.

Needless to say, I’ve been putting off putting in a garden for years. This time (staying at home all day, every day) has everyone reflecting on the important things in life. Being a homeschool teacher has me really thinking about what I want my girls to be learning. And with all this extra time on my hands I’m wondering why I haven’t been using my canning skills and if I can still take a chicken from the yard to the freezer in 10 minutes.

So Bingham Homestead 2.0 is starting out a little slower. Getting a few garden plots going and teaching the girls all about it as we go.

I honestly think it will take years of convincing before my husband ever agrees to chickens again anyway! 🤣🤣🤣 He DID NOT find it funny on April Fools.
